Why is she looking over her shoulder, as though hoping to see who is standing behind her.
What has made her turn her head?

Vermeer was an interesting artist and one of my favorite artists (Waterhouse is #1 though). I particular like Vermeer’s “The Kitchen Maid” for the detail. Thanks so much for starting this site, Jonie! I love art and opera and will be visiting often.
